TEC 111, 112, 211, 212, 311, 312, 411 English Communication for Management and Technology Professionals (4 units, 7 levels)
Designed for non-English speakers to prepare for academic and professional works in English speaking environments.. Completion of 211 or 311 level is required for non-native students to enter undergraduate or graduate level programs, respectively.
TEC 501 Proseminar for Certificates (1 unit)
Provides students with an overview of minor and certificate programs offered by the School of Information Technology and Communication Design. Administrative processes, development and approval of an Individualized Learning Plan and an understanding of the portfolio development requirements for completion of their program are covered.
TEC 531 Problem Solving and Programming (4 units)
Introductory course that develops problem-solving techniques while examining numerical and non-numerical problems from various disciplines. Students design solutions and learn to program in an industry standard high-level programming language.
TEC 534 Unix and X Windows (4 units)
Introduces the UNIX operating system, X Windows environment, and its interface layers. Compare Unix to other popular operation systems. Fundamental operating system concepts are also introduced.
TEC 537 Computing Architectures and Environments (4 units)
Covers computer architectures, operating systems, and computer systems management. Includes data representation, memory, registers, and internals of common computers and user system interfaces. Knowledge of CICU programming helpful but not mandatory.
TEC 581 Computer Networking (4 units)
Survey data communications technology fundamentals, Local Area Networks, Wide Area Networks, Internet and internetworking protocols including TCP/IP, network security and performance, emerging industry trends such as voice over the network and high speed networking. Designed as a foundation for students who wish to pursue more advanced telecommunications studies including certificate programs. Includes hands-on networking labs that incorporate Cisco modules as a lab component.
TEC 594 Internship (1-8 units)
Students work with practicing professionals in the community in a volunteer or paid internship that requires critical thinking and specialized management, IT, multimedia, or applied computing skills. The amount of academic work done, not total hours of internship commitment, determines the amount of academic credit. Can be repeated with written approval.
TEC 595 Special Topics (1-8 units)
Specialized study of a particular topic within the School of Information Technology and Communications Design. May be repeated for additional credit when topics vary and as subjects permit.
TEC 599 Capstone for Certificates (1 unit)
Typically taken at the last term of study. Students create and execute a detailed Capstone project with the approval of the student's advising committee. This course also introduces learning portfolio design, fundamental proposal writing and project management.
TEC 621 Marketing and Product Development for the Global Market (4 units)
Discuss the globalization of new products with the help of a global new product development model. Provide a framework for the new product development process, bearing in mind the increasing globalization of markets. This course provides exercises in the joint functioning of engineering, marketing, market research, R&D and management from the first stage of product development.
TEC 623 Strategic Management in a Flat World (4 units)
Many barriers to international trade fell and a wave of firms began pursuing global strategies to gain a competitive advantage. With advances of telecommunication technology and regulations of the World Trade Organization, some industries benefit more from globalization than others and some nations have a comparative advantage over other nations. To create a successful global strategy, managers first must understand the nature of global industries and the dynamics of global competition.
TEC 634 Advanced Systems Administration (4 units)
Focuses UNIX Systems Administration and is designed to be a sequel to the TEC 534 Unix and X Windows course. Covers advanced topics related to setup, configuration, and maintenance of UNIX servers, including system security, Perl scripts, and server backups.
TEC 651 Starting High Tech Ventures (4 units)
Examines venture formation and growth following completion of a business plan. Focuses on ongoing marketing. Decision-making and accounting and financial management. Students examine startup and growth management issues faced by real-life ventures and meet with entrepreneurs, small business lawyers, accountants and investors. Students also receive assistance in approaching potential sources of capital and other resources.
TEC 660 Leadership and Organizational Behavior in High-Tech (4 units)
Explores individual and organizational behavior in the context of the global, technology-based company environment, including structures, processes, and systems. Knowledge areas include: leadership, communication, teamwork, group dynamics, organization change and development, conflict and conflict resolution, multicultural diversity, ethics, leadership, and decision making.
TEC 696 Advanced Directed Study (1-8 units)
Students work with faculty member(s) closely to conduct advanced research and development in the technology, media and management fields. Repeatable.
