The Information Technology and Communication Design (ITCD) major is designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills to apply advanced technology to solve real world communication problems.

BS ITCD provides students with a holistic approach to these disciplines, and an understanding of their impact on our lives. It combines the creative and technical aspects of modern computer technology to create, manage, deliver, and present information in a variety of different forms. It encompasses the study of computers and how they are designed to process information, the design and development of software for a variety of purposes, the transmission of information between machines and from machines to people, the mathematical tools needed to organize and interpret that information, the use of media tools and design principles to develop aesthetic products which inform and provoke thought, and the new media and its representation of information. Although the program emphasizes a range of technical concepts and skills, substantial emphasis is placed on the application of these technologies, on the ability to work collaboratively in the solution of problems, and on communicating those solutions effectively.

The major requires a core of basic knowledge, the ability to use the "tools of the trade", and in-depth understanding of the principles and practices of the specific area of study. At each level, students will be required to demonstrate proficiency before moving to the next level. Proficiency will be defined for each area by a specific set of outcomes representing skills and knowledge. The major is heavily project-based, and in most cases, competency will be demonstrated in a project.

The Major Learning Outcomes (MLOs) for the major are in three groups: Core Outcomes (required of all graduates),  Emphasis Outcomes (students choose one from seven emphases), and Advanced Outcomes (required of all graduates, primarily as part of the Capstone courses). Students wishing more flexibility in the design of their personal degree programs must have a faculty member approve a learning plan proposal before beginning work on the degree. It is expected that the student will work with faculty members and appropriate representatives from industry in the fulfillment of their requirements.

Consonant with the vision statement of CSUMB, all students in this program will be required to use their acquired knowledge and skills in community service work, and will engage in entrepreneurial activities related to their major.
