What is the Certificate in Computer Networking all about? The Certificate in Computer Networking provides non-matriculated students with an opportunity to explore their particular interests in the design, development, administration, and maintenance of computer networks. The Certificate in Computer Networking allows students to tailor their certificate curriculum so that it can be integrated with their careers and professions. Students can choose to take courses from ITCD or through Extended Education that fulfill the learning outcomes (LOs) for the certificate program. Following CSUMB’s outcome-based philosophy and ITCD’s portfolio process, each student needs to take a one-unit ProSeminar to complete the certificate. What will I gain by completing a Certificate in Computer Networking? Many community members, would like to combine their specific academic interests with an emphasis in information technology and communication design. Certificates offer a means for professional accomplishment and community recognition. The goal of the ITCD Certificate in Computer Networking is to encourage members of the communities that CSUMB serves to pursue their interest in Information Technology. Further, this Certificate in Computer Networking offered by ITCD formally recognizes that ITCD has an obligation to provide high quality educational opportunities to community members who want a deeper understanding of information technology science in order to enhance their learning experience and career opportunity. How do I complete this certificate? The Certificate in Computer Networking requires a minimum of five CSUMB courses or equivalent courses offered by CSUMB Extended Ed, which in most cases amounts to a minimum of four courses plus the 1-unit ProSeminar. Delivery of the courses can be on-campus, off-campus, or through distributed learning. Following CSUMB’s outcomes-based education model, students can choose to demonstrate fulfillment of the learning outcomes through independent assessments. Prerequisites Prerequisites exist for most courses in the certificate program. At a minimum, students should have competency in the basic use of computers and standard software packages equivalent to the outcomes of CST 101: Technology Tools. What will I learn? ~ LO 0: Individualized Learning Plan. Produce an individual learning plan that aligns professional and academic interests with the minor pathway. ~ LO 1: Knowledge of Computers Students will demonstrate knowledge of how a computer represents and transmits information, a computer's component parts and peripherals, and how a computer's parts and components are organized and interfaced. Students will demonstrate ability to perform basic operations (i.e., run applications, manage and navigate files) on a variety of platforms, including Mac, PC, and UNIX operating systems. ~ LO 2: Principles of Telecommunications The student will acquire a broad-based understanding of the technical, analytical, design, and regulatory aspects of concern to the data communications professional. ~ LO 3: Networking Outcome The last and a very important component of many technical systems involves the networking of computer systems and the delivery of data over these networks. This component focuses on teaching the current and future standards and protocols for computer networking. A treatment of both the physical as well as soft protocols is given. ~ LO 4: Specialization Students will demonstrate ability to produce a substantial network project in a specialized area. What courses can I take to satisfy the learning outcomes? ITCD will develop and offer a number of different courses designed to satisfy the learning outcomes in a variety of different models to accommodate the different situations and schedules of those who desire the certificate. Courses from the current CSUMB catalog that fulfill the outcomes are: ~ LO 0: Individualized Learning Plan. CST 301: ProSeminar for Minors and Certificates ~ LO 1: Knowledge of Computers CST 337: Computing Architectures and Environments ~ LO 2: Principles of Telecommunications CST 311: Introduction to Telecommunications ~ LO 3: Networking Outcome CST 312: Telecommunications Standards ~ LO 4: Networking Specialization CST 384: Advanced LAN / WAN Systems Integration or CST 313: Telecommunications Management Prerequisite Competency CST 101: Technology Tools, or equivalent Additional Recommended Courses: CST 231: Problem Solving and Programming CST 334: Unix and X Windows CST 434: Advanced Systems Administration What will my learning environment be like? Our campus location—an hour from Silicon Valley, the greatest concentration of hardware and software producers in the world, and two hours from San Francisco, home to a great number of creative designers and content developers—is a huge asset. On campus, our students enjoy small classes conducted in spacious, cutting-edge facilities. A young university established in 1994, CSUMB has been wired for the 21st century since inception. Additionally, we have established working relationships with a number of trend setting companies such as Sun Microsystems, Apple, and Cisco Systems as well as many local employers such as the Defense Manpower Data Center, CTB/Mc Graw-Hill, and others. These companies provide us with the latest in hardware and software and advise us as our dynamic program evolves. They also provide internship and employment opportunities for our students. What advising and support services are provided for students pursuing the Certificate in Computer Networking? There is a Student Services program to help you resolve issues and to direct you to available resources, including a Peer Advising program that will be helpful with studying, development of an Individualized Learning Plan, and working toward your goals. Faculty advising is also available to assist you in reaching your academic goals in a timely manner. How does this certificate program prepare students for specific careers?
