What is the Certificate in Instructional Design Technology all about? The Certificate in Instructional Design Technology provides non-matriculated students with an opportunity to explore their particular interests in Instructional Design Technology. The Certificate in Instructional Design Technology allows students to tailor their certificate curriculum so that it can be integrated with their careers and professions. Students can choose to take courses from ITCD or through Extended Education that fulfill the learning outcomes (LOs) for the certificate program. Following CSUMB’s outcome-based philosophy and ITCD’s portfolio process, each student needs to take a one-unit ProSeminar course to complete the certificate. What will I gain by completing a Certificate in Instructional Design Technology? Many community members , would like to combine their specific academic interests with an emphasis in information technology and communication design. Certificates offer a means for professional accomplishment and community recognition. The goal of the ICST certificate is to encourage members of the communities that CSUMB serves to pursue their interest in Instructional Design Technology. Further, this Certificate in Instructional Design Technology offered by ICST formally recognizes that ITCD has an obligation to provide high quality educational opportunities to all community members who want a deeper understanding of Instructional Design Technology in order to enhance their learning experience and career opportunities. How do I complete this certificate? The Certificate in Instructional Design Technology requires a minimum of five CSUMB courses or equivalent courses offered by CSUMB Extended Ed, which in most cases amounts to a minimum of four (4) courses plus the 1-unit ProSeminar. Delivery of the courses can be on-campus, off-campus, or through distributed learning. Following CSUMB’s outcomes-based education model, students can choose to demonstrate fulfillment of the learning outcomes through independent assessments. Prerequisites Prerequisites exist for most courses in the certificate program. At a minimum, students should have competency in the basic use of computers and standard software packages equivalent to the outcomes of CST 101: Technology Tools. What will I learn? ~ LO 0: Individual Learning Plan. Produce an individual learning plan that aligns professional and academic interests with certificate pathway. ~ LO 1: Multimedia Foundations. Use computer-based tools to demonstrate knowledge of design principles in conceiving, planning and developing multimedia solutions. ~ LO 2: Interactive Multimedia Design. Produce a design project that uses interactive multimedia to remedy an instructional problem. ~ LO 3: Instructional Design. Apply systematic instructional design and development techniques. Design, develop and evaluate an instructional unit. What courses can I take to satisfy the learning outcomes? ITCD will develop and offer a number of different courses designed to satisfy the learning outcomes in a variety of different models to accommodate the different situations and schedules of those who desire the certificate. Courses from the current CSUMB catalog that fulfill the outcomes are: LO 0: Individual Learning Plan CST 301: ProSeminar for Minors and Certificates LO 1: Multimedia Foundations CST 201: Media Tools LO 2: Interactive Multimedia Design CST 321: Multimedia I LO 3: Instructional Design CST 341: Introduction to Instructional Design and CST 442: Advanced Instructional Design, Prerequisite Competency CST 101: Technology Tools, or equivalent What will my learning environment be like? Our campus location—an hour from Silicon Valley, the greatest concentration of hardware and software producers in the world, and two hours from San Francisco, home to a great number of creative designers and content developers—is a huge asset. On campus, our students enjoy small classes conducted in spacious, cutting-edge facilities. A young university established in 1994, CSUMB has been wired for the 21st century since inception. Additionally, we have established working relationships with a number of trend setting companies such as Sun Microsystems, Apple, and Cisco Systems as well as many local employers such as the Defense Manpower Data Center, CTB/Mc Graw-Hill, and others. These companies provide us with the latest in hardware and software and advise us as our dynamic program evolves. They also provide internship and employment opportunities for our students. What advising and support services are provided for students pursuing the Certificate in Instructional Design Technology? There is a Student Services program to help you resolve issues and to direct you to available resources, including a Peer Advising program that will be helpful with studying, development of an Individualized Learning Plan, and working toward your goals. Faculty advising is also available to assist you in reaching your academic goals in a timely manner. How does this certificate program prepare students for specific careers? This program includes high quality hands-on and project based coursework delivered by ITCD faculty and working professionals to give the most up to date knowledge and skills in Instructional Design Technology.
